Studio Notes

We hope this message finds you safe and in good health. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, If I Can’t Dance’s office and archive will be closed until further notice. During the coming weeks, our team will continue to work remotely and can be reached via (e)mail. Feel free to reach out to us at any time—given that the seriously restricted conditions of work and daily life affect us all differently (socially, economically, and mentally) we find it crucial to maintain and strengthen our networks of connection, communication, and support in the midst of many unknowns.

With that in mind, we want to express our support for the cultural sector emergency fund that has been established (see kunsten92.nl) and to share the following contact point where independent cultural practitioners can report on how work and income has been affected by the current crises: kunstenbond.typeform.com. We also encourage you to bring to our attention any other relief funds being established, both in the Netherlands and elsewhere—in the coming days we will start a running list on our website.

Finally, as we will all be spending more time at home, we join numerous other institutions in making some reading materials available for you. By popular request, we’ve decided to share PDFs of the texts from our Edition VIII reading group, which was organized around the thematic “Ritual and Display” by our 2019-2020 Research Fellow Giulia Damiani. We’ll start with the cluster of readings from the group’s gathering on Magic and Spells with texts by Bhanu Kapil, Ernesto de Martino and Rebecca Tamás. The texts are available via this link. More readings to come in the next weeks.

In the meantime, stay safe, and please take care of yourself and those around you,

Team If I Can’t Dance

Marcel van den Berg, Frédérique Bergholtz, Anik Fournier, Sara Giannini, Megan Hoetger, and Hans Schamlé
