Looking at the video below, which characteristics of capitalism did you recognize? Which are missing? In which ways have patriarchy and capitalism interacted in your day to day life life? ›››

Played by Nica Roses.

Steps for methodology:

  1. Choose a recent event of everyday life that brought you discomfort and left you with questions. It can be a moment of struggle, a micro-aggression, a moment of feeling abandoned, etc.

  2. Extract the (allegorical) characters that created this situation. What were the systems of oppression at play? Borders? White supremacy? Capitalism?
  3.
What were the characters resulting from these systems of oppression? Poverty? Homelessness?

  4. Which character do you play inside of the situation? Who is Self? What are the characteristics, colors, personality of Self?

  5. What are the characters that can bring hope, that have a transformative power inside the situation? It could be Playfulness? Hope itself? Revolution, Subversion, Rebellion? Care?
  6.
Once these characters are played out on paper, imagine and write down the dialogues between them. What is the initial situation? Who is dominating the story? Who is struggling to be heard?

  7. Find a beginning, middle and end to the story. How can the ending become empowering? How can it defy the laws of everyday life and is it possible to create a response beyond what we already know?
  8. Gather a group of friends to play the characters. Improvise with costumes and make-up to find the « taste » of each character.
  9. Enjoy playing this performance in a group. Don’t be afraid to overdramatize your conversations and expressions!
  10. Have time to talk about how it felt and if you learned anything extra from the situation or if there is any changes in feelings, perspective, etc.
